The Light of the World

In John 8:12 Jesus makes the second of His seven "I AM" statements, saying "I am the light of the world." How does the Bible contrast light and darkness and what does it mean for Jesus to be the "light of the world"? Today, some two-thousand years later, what does it mean for the followers of Jesus that He is the light of the world?
